Edward J. (Jim) Clayton III

District Administrator

Mr. Clayton earned a BA in History/Political Science from Metropolitan State College (nka Metropolitan State University of Denver) and a Master of Science (MS) in Judicial Administration from the University of Denver, College of Law.

He began his career in the Courts and the Administration of Justice with the Colorado Judicial Branch in 1973.  He worked for nearly 3 years (1977-1979) in the Texas Judicial System.  Mr. Clayton has been the District Administrator of the Seventh Judicial District (7JD) of Colorado (Delta, Gunnison, Hinsdale, Montrose, Ouray and San Miguel Counties, CO) since 1979.  He also held the position of Chief Probation Officer of the 7JD in 1994-95.

Mr. Clayton is a member of the Executive Council of the Colorado District Administrators Assn which is liaison to the Chief Judge Council.  Currently, Mr. Clayton is a member of a number of statewide committees including State Court Administrator’s Advisory Council (AMAC).  He is past-president and 10 year board member of the Colorado Association of Court Employees.

Mr. Clayton is a retired US Army artillery officer having spent 21 years in both active and reserve service.

Mr. Clayton is also a member of the Colorado High School Football Officials’, Basketball Officials’ and Baseball Umpires’ Associations.  He hase been involved with officiating and the assignment of high school officials since 1972.
